Associations between self‐reported sleep quality and white matter in community‐dwelling older adults: A prospective cohort study

چکیده
Both sleep disturbances and decline in white matter microstructure are commonly observed in ageing populations, as well as in age-related psychiatric and neurological illnesses. A relationship between sleep and white matter microstructure may underlie such relationships, but few imaging studies have directly examined this hypothesis. In a study of 448 community-dwelling members of the Whitehall II Imaging Sub-Study aged between 60 and 82 years (90 female, mean age 69.2 ± 5.1 years), we used the magnetic resonance imaging technique diffusion tensor imaging to examine the relationship between self-reported sleep quality and white matter microstructure. Poor sleep quality at the time of the diffusion tensor imaging scan was associated with reduced global fractional anisotropy and increased global axial diffusivity and radial diffusivity values, with small effect sizes. Voxel-wise analysis showed that widespread frontal-subcortical tracts, encompassing regions previously reported as altered in insomnia, were affected. Radial diffusivity findings remained significant after additional correction for demographics, general cognition, health, and lifestyle measures. No significant differences in general cognitive function, executive function, memory, or processing speed were detected between good and poor sleep quality groups. The number of times participants reported poor sleep quality over five time-points spanning a 16-year period was not associated with white matter measures. In conclusion, these data demonstrate that current sleep quality is linked to white matter microstructure. Small effect sizes may limit the extent to which poor sleep is a promising modifiable factor that may maintain, or even improve, white matter microstructure in ageing. متن کاملAssociation between Objectively Measured Sleep Quality and Obesity in Community-dwelling Adults Aged 80 Years or Older: A Cross-sectional Study
The purpose of this study was to examine the association between objective measures of sleep quality and obesity in older community-dwelling people. This cross-sectional study included 189 community-dwelling adults aged ≥ 80 yr (83.4 ± 2.5 yr [age range, 80-95 yr]). Participants wore an accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X+) on their non-dominant wrist 24 hr per day for 7 consecutive nights. Sleep par...
متن کاملEvaluation of Quality of Life and its Related Factors in Elderly in Mashhad in 1396
Objectives As Iran is one of the countries in the world which its population moves toward aging rapidly, it is essential to consider older adults' needs and concerns, which might have an impact on their health-related quality of life. Quality of life is a multi-dimensional concept that has physical, mental, and social components. The present study has been conducted to determine the correlation...
متن کاملDoes prospective memory influence quality of life in community-dwelling older adults?
Older adults commonly experience declines in prospective memory, which describes one's ability to "remember to remember," and can adversely affect instrumental activities of daily living and healthcare compliance. However, the extent to which prospective memory failures may influence quality of life in typically aging older adults is not well understood. One-hundred and four community-dwelling ...
متن کاملFragmented Sleep and Cortical Thinning in Old Adults: Time to Wake Up?
Retired older adults may have the freedom to sleep ad libitum, but this benefit can be offset by age-associated changes in sleep such as reduced duration, poorer subjective quality, increased fragmentation and/or altered macrostructure. Although sleep duration is probably the measure that has traditionally received the most attention,1 there is accumulating evidence that sleep quality and sleep...
